Much of the heavy lifting of digital scholarship and pedagogy occurs behind the scenes, in the form of Learning Management System (LMS) support, media hosting and maintenance, etc. DP&S’s Digital Pedagogy Specialists perform work critical to the day-to-day functioning of teaching and research at Bucknell.
Moodle is the LMS used by Bucknell University. It provides dedicated space for course materials, from syllabi and assignments to discussion forums and more.
Kaltura Mediaspace is a streaming video service which enables the uploading and sharing of videos, and now supports closed-captioning by request. Kaltura Mediaspace also integrates with Moodle. As of this writing, Bucknell’s Moodle/MyMediaspace Library has 5,835 video entries. For more on Bucknell’s use of Mediaspace, click here.
This year, Library & IT expanded our WordPress network to include three new sub-networks. Our primary domain blogs.bucknell.edu remains the same, but we have added clubs.bucknell.edu, courses.bucknell.edu, and scholar.bucknell.edu. The expansion attempts to address the need for URLs that more accurately reflect the work being done on the network.
Spring semester saw a limited release of the networks, with 11 classes using Courses. That number more than doubled in the fall, with 23 class sites utilizing the new courses.bucknell.edu domain. While faculty are encouraged to migrate their class sites to courses, approximately 30 classes still used blogs last year.
There were 25 new scholar.bucknell.edu sites created in 2016. Faculty and staff created scholar sites that showcased the work being done in research labs and university programs, recent publications, and other faculty accomplishments. There were several sites created for conferences hosted at Bucknell.
In fall of 2016, DP&S ran a workshop series to introduce faculty to the range of capabilities available on our WordPress install. While the series focused on helping faculty develop their professional scholarly websites, there was also a session focused on how to create a dynamic course site.
